Dr. Angeline Dean, The Bold Nonconformist

Nestled in the heart of New Jersey, amidst vibrant communities, resides a beacon of inspiration—Dr. Angeline Dean. Her life's tapestry weaves together activism, education, and unwavering authenticity, illuminating a path of resilience and uncompromising commitment to truth.

Dr. Dean's journey into activism began with the roots of her upbringing, where Mary Dean Dillards’ (her grandmother) advocacy set the stage for her own. Witnessing the power of community support, and her father’s insistence on her reading and understanding all three volumes of The Encyclopedia of Black History, emphasizing the impact of standing up for justice, Dr. Dean's path was paved with a sense of responsibility to effect real change. The catalyst for Dr. Dean's activism was her deployment to Ferguson, Missouri, in the wake of the Michael Brown tragedy. Immersed in the community's forced resilience and the stark realities of systemic oppression, she found her calling—to expose and disrupt oppressive systems and amplify marginalized voices.

Yet, Dr. Dean's journey was not without its hurdles. Confronting white-injected oppression (internalized racism), racism, and systemic barriers, she refused to conform to societal and institutional expectations, embracing her truth and challenging the status quo. In her upcoming book The Whiteness of AKKKADEMIA, and The Making of A Slave- I was Never Down with OPP”, Dr. Dean unveils the importance of activism within her grad school journey, inviting readers to confront the realities of systemic oppression. Central to Dr. Dean's work is the importance of community and collective action. She emphasizes the need for a supportive village—a network of co-liberators and advocates standing together in solidarity. Dr. Dean challenges us to reexamine our understanding of activism and allyship through her story and insights, inspiring us to confront injustice with unwavering dedication and courage.

In a powerful conversation, Dr. Dean reflects on her experiences navigating academia and systemic oppression. Despite facing resistance, she remained steadfast in her commitment to effecting real change, offering words of wisdom to younger generations and her younger self.

Looking to the future, Dr. Dean is focused on continuing her healing and empowerment work. From launching podcasts to conducting workshops, she is committed to providing resources and support to those in need. By amplifying marginalized voices, teaching about systems, and also challenging oppressive systems, Dr. Dean believes we can create a brighter future by utilizing critical thinking skills to convey the stories of those experiencing oppressed realities.

As we navigate the complexities of our world, may we draw inspiration from Dr. Angeline Dean's unwavering commitment to justice. Her journey is a testament to the power of the many forced resilience instances of African American women, prominent authenticity, and collective action. Truly, her work is a beacon of hope in the fight for a more just and equitable society.
