This month, we celebrate Black History Month and recognize the contributions of African American leaders in our communities. While the accomplishments of these trailblazers are often highlighted during this time, it is important to remember that the fight for racial justice and equity is an ongoing one. Here are some ways you can make a difference and create positive change this Black History Month.
Support Black-Owned Businesses
One way to make a difference is by supporting local black-owned businesses in your community. Not only do these businesses provide jobs and opportunities for those who may not have access to them otherwise, but they also add diversity and vibrancy to the local economy. If you’re looking for new places to shop or grab a bite to eat, consider patronizing black-owned businesses in your area!
Donate & Volunteer
Another way to make a difference is by donating your time or money to organizations that focus on empowering African Americans in their communities. Whether it’s volunteering at a soup kitchen or donating money to a charity that provides resources for underprivileged families, any action you take can help bring about positive change. You can also donate books or other materials to schools in low-income areas—these donations will help ensure kids have access to educational resources they might not otherwise have access to.
Educate Yourself & Take Action
Finally, educate yourself about the current issues facing African Americans today and learn about how you can be an ally. This could mean attending protests or rallies, writing letters/emails/petitions, reaching out to your representatives in Congress, and speaking out against injustice when you see it happening. Taking action will help create lasting change within your own community as well as on a global scale.
There are many ways we can all make a difference this Black History Month (and throughout the year!). From shopping at black-owned businesses, donating your time or money towards causes that empower African Americans, and taking action against injustice—it's up to us all do our part and create positive change in our communities! So let’s get started! What kind of impact will you make?
