As it has progressed tremendously over the past several decades, the world of sports has become an incredibly diverse entity. Professional athletes come in virtually every shape and size while both genders are equally well represented in both men’s and women’s league, serving as the greatest markers of the type of inclusion and acceptance promoted in professional sports for decades now. This trend also only continues to grow as we move further and further into the 21st century and this type of diversity becomes increasingly more common in all industries and not just that of professional sports. One high profile sports executive has found himself in hot water this week after certain comments and actions of his denouncing this diversity in the most disgusting of ways came to light following an investigation by the NBA, and Phoenix Suns majority owner Dennis Sarver has been suspended from team and league activities for the forthcoming year as a result.
A few weeks ago we took a look at the upcoming NCAA football season and discussed the AP preseason poll and how the biggest programs in the country stacked up against each other leading into the 2022 season. High profile programs such as Alabama and Georgia were expectedly atop the preliminary rankings while other programs such as Texas A&M were ranked higher than expected and looked to make their presence felt early on. Now as we enter week three of the NCAA football season, we are slowly beginning to see how this season is likely to shake out and who we can expect to fight for the national championship once playoffs roll around. Lets take a look at the biggest winners and losers of the NCAA football season thus far and who is likely to take home the gold in a few short months.
Over the course of the existence of professional sports, fans have seen athletes commit remarkable feats that have seen them defy tremendous odds in the most remarkable of ways. Take for example Tiger Woods winning the 1997 Masters at just 21 years old, or Naomi Osaka winning her first US Open title in 2018 at the same age as Tiger and becoming the 4th ranked professional tennis player in the world. As sports science continues to evolve and professional athletes adapt to these advances, these feats only seem to become increasingly more common and provide fans with even more opportunities to see young and budding professional athletes leave their mark upon their respective sports. Just in this past week they were treated to exactly that, witnessing Carlos Alcaraz shock the world and become the youngest to ever win the US Open when he took home the title this past weekend.
With the announcement of veteran QB Joe Flacco starting against the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday, September 11th, 2022, WAJ Sports felt it would be appropriate to share our recap of the Take Flight Fundraiser that happened last weekend August 28th. The coordinators of the fundraiser, TobiasEats and Alberto’s Angels, raised money for The Valerie Fund. I had the pleasure of joining the crew as they sold tickets to the annual preseason game from tailgating in the parking lot to cheering in the Wynbett Green Room. The main mission was to sell tickets to the preseason game with the proceeds going towards affordable health care for cancer patients. The NY Jets defeated the NY Giants 31-27 with home-field advantage. The interview will be coming soon along with a special spread highlighting the Green Gang’s participation in the charity event.
