Starting a magazine in 2014 was not the obvious move. Digital media was eating print alive, major publications were cutting staff, and the conventional wisdom said that independent print publishing was a romantic idea with terrible economics.
We started WAJ Magazine anyway.
Twelve years and 42 issues later, we are still here — with a new website, a native blog, a growing national audience, and a community of readers, cover subjects, and contributors who have made this magazine what it is. Here is what we learned along the way.
Start With a Why That Is Bigger Than a Business
WAJ Magazine exists because Bridget Papino and Daniel Banks looked around Bergen County, New Jersey and saw stories that were not being told. Creatives doing extraordinary work. Entrepreneurs building real businesses. Community leaders fighting real fights. Athletes carrying the weight of their neighborhoods. All of them deserving a platform that would tell their stories with the depth and dignity they deserved.
That why has kept us going through every challenge. When a business case is unclear, the mission carries you. Know your mission before you know anything else.
Your Community Is Your Business Model
We have never had a venture capital check. We have never relied on a major media company's infrastructure. What we have is a community of people who believe in what we do — cover subjects who share their features, readers who buy our issues, advertisers who want access to our audience because they know it is real and loyal.
The community is the business model. Every decision we make is filtered through one question: does this serve the people we exist to serve? When the answer is yes, the business tends to take care of itself.
Consistency Over Perfection
Issue 001 of WAJ Magazine was not as good as Issue 042. That is exactly how it is supposed to work. The mistake most people make when starting a creative project is waiting until it is perfect before sharing it with the world.
We put it out. We improved. We put it out again. Forty-two times. The magazine you see today is the result of 12 years of consistent iteration, not a single moment of inspiration.
Own Your Relationships
The cover subjects who have graced our pages are not just editorial decisions. They are relationships — real relationships built on mutual respect, genuine storytelling, and a commitment to representing people accurately and fully. Those relationships are the foundation of everything.
A magazine is only as strong as the trust it has built with the people it covers. Build that trust carefully, and never sacrifice it for a headline.
The Independent Route Is Hard and Worth It
We could have sold. We could have become part of a larger media company's portfolio. We chose not to, because independence means we control the narrative, we choose our cover subjects on merit, and we serve our community without interference.
That independence is expensive sometimes. It is also the thing we are most proud of.
