Does New Jersey Want Biden to Step Down

After a morning where it seemed like Democrats were at least going to be in a static waiting point, asking the president to show them that he can be the kind of standard-bearer that will give them confidence after that debate a week and a half ago, we are now seeing Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill come forward and say that she wants President Biden to step down as the nominee of the party.

North Jersey Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill has joined the small but growing number of Democratic leaders calling for President Joe Biden to end his reelection campaign after his widely panned debate performance last month.

"I know President Biden and his team have been true public servants and put the country and the best interests of democracy first. Because I know President Biden cares deeply about the future of our country, I'm asking that he declare that he won't run for reelection and will help lead us through a process towards a new nominee."

Sherrill becomes the seventh Democrat to publicly call for President Biden to resign his post as the Democratic nominee. She's the ninth overall, considering we've had some reporting that takes us inside private phone calls and other conversations Democrats have had with their colleagues.

As recently as Monday, she issued a statement sidestepping the issue of Biden's future. Instead, she said her focus was "beating Donald Trump and taking back the House, which is more urgent than ever considering recent Supreme Court decisions." She states, “Stakes are too high to stay silent. I have heard from people in my district who are united in their concern for our country and our future," she wrote. "They want a leader who can continue to build on our successes but is also able to turn the nation’s attention to the urgent threat that Trump presents to our democracy, our freedoms, and our country.” When I think of my four children and all of the rights that another Trump presidency endangers, and in light of the recent Supreme Court decision that gave excessive power to the president of the United States, the stakes are too high – and the threat is too real – to stay silent."

This is certainly not the trend line that you want to see if you're the Biden campaign and the Biden administration, who are trying to stop the bleeding and ensure that Democrats stay in wait-and-see mode, allowing him to prove himself as the nominee instead of coming forward and saying after a week and a half that they'd like him to step down
