New York Mets Righty Max Scherzer Sidelined 6-8 Weeks With Oblique Strain - We Are Jersey
Spring has sprung, May is almost over, and baseball is in full swing. America’s favorite pastime kicked things off last month when the MLB held its opening day on April 7th and fans have been as eager as ever to get outside in the hopes of catching a foul ball, highlighting exactly why baseball is considered the country’s favorite pastime. Fans still have plenty of baseball left to watch as well in the coming months, however they won’t get to see one of the sport’s best pitchers on the mound until sometime this summer. New York Mets ace Max Scherzer was sidelined for 6-8 weeks with a strained oblique in his right leg. Scherzer first came into the league back in 2008 as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks before rising to stardom. In 2013 he would post 21 wins as a member of the Detroit Tigers and 20 in 2016 as a member of the Washington Nationals, firmly cementing his position as one of the best pitchers in the MLB. This year he joined the New York Mets and had already amassed a 5-1 record in 8 games alongside 59 strikeouts, seemingly the start of another all-star caliber season from the esteemed pitcher. His Cy Young hopes took a blow this week however when Scherzer was officially placed on the DL and the Mets announced he will miss 6-8 weeks with a right oblique strain. He joins the Mets other ace pitcher Jacob DeGrom who has been out since spring training and isn’t expected to return to the mound until this summer, highlighting a potential hurdle the Mets will seemingly face in the coming weeks as a result of their depleted pitching staff. Scherzer’s injury occurred during the sixth inning of his most recent start against the St. Louis Cardinals, with an MRI taken after the game confirming his injury. How the Mets will adapt to this loss remains to be seen, though it certainly won’t be easy. As any baseball fan knows, a team is truly only as good as their pitching staff. The Mets’ pitching staff has certainly take some considerable blows however, seemingly standing to challenge any early success they have managed to garner. Fans will just have to remain patient in anticipation of DeGrom and Scherzer making their returns to the mound.
